When visiting Leadville, Colorado, drive over nearby Independence Pass, the highest-elevation paved crossing of the Continental Divide in the country. Motorists who make the 6% upgrade and negotiate the hairpin turns on the way up are rewarded by an ample parking area at the top of the pass, and a scenic overlook you can walk out to. Note: Independence Pass is closed during the colder parts of the year.
