We kick off the autumn apple season with Gala, a handsome, aromatic red-skinned and yellow-fleshed apple. Look for plentiful Gala apples at our farmstand in September. Other apple varieties available: Zestar, Gingergold, Sansa, and Red Gravenstein. To ripen soon: Snapdragon.

At the farmstand this week, we have available red and green apples, as well as peaches, blackberries, raspberries, beefsteak tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, pies, baked goods, honey, jams, milk, cheese, mugs, and donuts. Look for Snapdragon apples to be ripening soon, and our own cold-press apple cider to come in a few weeks.

After a certain number of years, we remove the trees from the orchard and plant a different crop there for a span of some years, like vegetables, grasses, or grains. Planting something different on that soil from what was there before enables the soil to be replenished.

Ant cam view of our grain drill. We have gotten a timely start on planting cover crop with our custom-modified Great Plains grain drill, so that during December, January, and February, the soil will be held in place by the grasses that grow up from the seeds we are planting right now, and will be more resistant to erosion. Stay tuned for more ant cam.
