Wickham’s Fruit Farm recommends Leadville, Colorado. With an elevation over 10,000 feet above sea level, Leadville is notable for being one of the highest-altitude incorporated municipalities in the United States.
Leadville hosts a mountain-bike race and tubing on the Arkansas River. The town features a historic opera house, house museums, and a Victorian hotel. One of the world’s largest molybdenum mines is located nearby.
Because of its high elevation, Leadville has some of the most congenial summertime temperatures in the country, with daily high temperatures in August often around 65 degrees F, and daily lows in the same month sometimes around 32 F. While nearby Aspen and Vail tend to be frequented by tourists, Leadville, in contrast, offers an authentic Colorado experience for those who are willing to venture off the beaten path.
Leadville also has a connection to the North Fork of Long Island. The Matchless Mine of Horace and Elizabeth McCourt “Baby Doe” Tabor, which is located on the outskirts of Leadville and can still be toured today, inspired Cutchogue composer Douglas Moore’s opera “The Ballad of Baby Doe.”
