International Voluntary Services was an American private volunteer organization that existed in the middle years of the 20th century and was a precursor to the Peace Corps. IVS sent many young Americans overseas to do agricultural service work with local farmers in various countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, Algeria, Laos, Nepal, Bolivia, and Indonesia.
Many of the Americans had grown up on the farm here in the United States. Although the organization closed down in 2002, IVS has left a legacy of cross-cultural informational exchange and cooperation in agriculture, and food-production-related innovations around the world.
We invite anyone with an interest in the legacy of international agricultural volunteerism to come to the IVS reunion, to be held in Knoxville, TN October 3 through 6, 2016.
