The late 1940s were a culturally distinct time in the history of the United States, a brief period of relative peace and increasing fortunes immediately after the end of World War II but before the beginning of the preoccupations of the 1950s.  The same year our Farmall tractors were being built, a young Quaker from Pennsylvania was writing a book that he based on his experiences on an island in the South Pacific.
